Walking On The Edge - Pai Canyon

During our trip in North Thailand, we also stopped in Pai and had a look at some of the attractions.

A bit outside town in the mid-afternoon we decided to stop at a place called Pai Canyon.

The short walk up the hill was ordinary enough but once we got to the top, it was a different story!

ree

Impressive views of rocky outcroppings, gorges, gullies, and distant mountains, with narrow and steep trails.

ree

I explored a bit, but felt really uncomfortable continuing walking on the narrower parts as these consist mainly of dried soil and didn’t exactly inspire confidence…

ree

My fear of heights didn’t help much either of course!

ree

Although we hadn’t heard of any accidents happening here, it was easy to imagine as there are no fences whatsoever!

ree

This one was a no go for me!

ree

We walked a wider path which didn’t give me the shakes and also offered impressive views.

ree

Luckily at this time, there weren't many other visitors around.

Apart from a few wooden benches at the beginning, there wasn’t much else.

ree

I guess it’s also a matter of age, if I had been in my 20s I probably wouldn’t have hesitated twice to walk the full 5.8 km loop.

40 years ago I did lots of crazy stuff which in hindsight makes me wonder at times if I had any sense at all.

ree

In those travel days, I  had more than a few wild experiences, but now at 66, I prefer to be a bit more careful ;-)

ree

Definitely worth a visit!

Apparently, sunsets are the most popular time to visit this canyon, as the skies will be very colorful, but I prefer to avoid the crowds!
