Bangkok Music Day

Once again, the Dishonorable Edward Pastanga and Wilhelmus von N teamed up for a musical event, in this case, even a double bill!
Last Saturday was Bangkok World Music Day, which took place at The One Bangkok, the latest giant Department Store in a presumably never-ending series… With 5 stages and 30 (unknown to us) bands, there was bound to be something worth listening to.
And later that evening, the Speakerbox had their Rock N’ Roll Night with Razorback, Johnny Loda Trio, and the old faithful Midnight Ramblers, in other words, this could be a hell of a day!
Razorback featured an old friend of DEP, Ross, on drums, and they usually play a decent mix of covers.
The Midnight Ramblers are a Stones Tribute Band and had a friend of Wilhelmus on guitar: Joe Cummings.
Only the Johnny Loda Trio was unknown to us…
DEP and I met earlier at a nearby bar for a few pre-festival beers, which went down well, no surprise there.
Around 4 pm, we wandered over to The One BKK and had to endure the rigamarole of checking in, even though admission was free. Of course, we did pay by supplying our data; nothing is really free these days…
Once inside, we ignored the music and first got ourselves a beer, priorities after all are important, right?
The first band, Hot Like Hell, had already started a few songs ago, and Wilhelmus finally joined us as well.
We welcomed his presence because the flow of unlimited beer was guaranteed for sure ;-)
HLH did a semi psychedelic funk, rock, Thai music set, not bad.
Nixsa Jingle played a Thai Soul / Spiritual Vibes / Jazz & New Age set, at least that’s how they describe their sound.
Yonlapa is a kind of psychedelic indie dream pop band, which was alright.
After watching these 3 bands, we were thinking of moving on to the Speakerbox for a bit more rocking music.
I must admit, though, having absolutely no recollection of how we got there…
Did we take a taxi, helicopter, or teleport ourselves there somehow?
According to DEP, we even had a burger before leaving… The only ‘food’ I remember having was a beer-flavored ice cream, which was rather disappointing!
When we arrived at the Speakerbox, Razorback had almost finished their set, but at least we were in time for their version of Bowie’s Heroes, cool!
Johnny Loda Trio played an excellent mix of rockabilly originals and covers, their version of Link Wray’s Jack The Ripper gave me the shivers and actually revived me!
The Midnight Ramblers had a new lead singer but didn’t disappoint; they played a brief but decent set of Stones classics.
Only disappointment for the bands and the venue must have been the limited number of people who showed up, sad really.
Shortly after midnight, I caught a taxi home, of which I can’t remember anything either, what else is new!
The day after, I had a look at the Johnny Loda CD I bought and noticed their feelings about tribute bands, I guess nobody from the Midnight Ramblers bought their disc!
